Problems of meaning, functions of visual culture in contemporary society, the role of galleries and museums, and the impact of imagery in advertising, popularmediaand consumer culture. Contemporary criticalmethodology. Lectures, seminar, 3 hours week. Note: TA contract for this course will be 60 hours. Department: Department of Visual Art – History of Art and Visual Culture Schedule: Winter Term (Duration 3) Wednesday and Friday 1330 - 1500 Delivery Method: SYNCH A fully online synchronous course is a conferencing learning environment that is delivered remotely through audio and video conferencing to provide simultaneous communications (i.e., at the same time) between an instructor at one site and students at other sites. A courseis considered to beoffered via synchronous conferencing if 80% or more of the content is delivered in this way. As such, a synchronous conferencing course may have occasional face-to-face meetings, a proctored exam, etc.,with theremainderof the content delivered through audio and video conferencing. audioand video conferencing. Compensation Teaching Assistant, Course Coordinator and Lab Demonstrator positions are paid according to the qualifications that the employee holds. Employees who do NOT hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the undergraduate rate - $23.30per hour. (Rate effective September 1, 2026) Employees who hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the graduate rate - $36.67per hour. (Rate effective September 1, 2026) In cases whereadditionalduties are required as part of a Teaching Assistant’s duties, these hours shall be compensated at theappropriate TeachingAssistant rate. Duties The duties and responsibilities of the Teaching Assistant shall be in accordance with Article 22 of the CUPE Local 4207, Unit 1, Collective Agreement. These are made up of scheduled contact time with students and non-classroom time (including preparation of seminar material, student consultation, marking or grading, examination proctoring, attending lectures, holding office hours, and other course administration as may be required. Qualifications 1. Applicants must have completed a 4-year Honours BA degree in Visual Arts, Art History, or Visual Culture. 2. Applicants must have completed a minimum of three credits in art history and/or visual culture, or equivalent, with at least an 80% average in those courses. 3. The successful applicant must have effective communication skills including the ability to explain subject material to students, be punctual in attending classes, and be able to meetappropriate deadlines. 4.
